COSMETIC fillers are becoming more affordable and more accessible, but for one woman a simple procedure turned her world upside down.

Carol Bryan

Carol Bryan visited her cosmetic surgeon to have dermal fillers in her face but it went horribly wrong, according to The Sun.

Carol Bryan

She was injected with two different fillers, combined in a syringe, in an area she shouldn’t have been and her face was left swollen and disfigured.
The reaction was so bad it left her blind in one eye and Carol said she contemplated taking her own life as she hid from not only her family and friends, but her own reflection in the mirror.

Carol Bryan

She told the The Independent: “I felt like I had the head of an alien, my forehead so heavy that it fell and covered my eyes so that I could not see unless I taped or held up my forehead.”
But Carol, from Florida, was no stranger to cosmetic procedures, having used Botox since she was in her late 30s.

Carol Bryan

In 2009, when she was 47, she decided to try fillers after cosmetic doctors told her she had lost the volume in her forehead and cheekbones.
It was a decision she would live to regret.
She hid away for three years until her daughter intervened and convinced her to move to Los Angeles to seek help.

Then, corrective surgery on her forehead damaged her optic nerve and caused her to go blind.

Carol Bryan

She said: “The pain of the corrective procedures is not quite describable. Then, years later, with the multiple surgeries to my face, each one was just as painful as the one previous.
“To anyone reading my story, I hope they will understand first that they are beautiful just as they are and deserve to be loved. Our collective perspective on beauty is so flawed that it is increasingly rare to meet someone who sees his/her own beauty.

Carol Bryan

Now, Carol is using her experience to help others struggling with disfigurement in her role as director of Face2Face Healing.
The organisation helps people emotionally and physically adapt to disfigurement after all medical help is done.

Carol Bryan

Carol wrote in her testimony to the organisation: “I have done so well at overcoming many challenges and now I can help others.
“I think that this focus and feeling will help me along my continued journey.
“I would love to be able to participate through Skype in your support group meetings when you get that set up.”

A WOMAN has lived her life feeling socially isolated due to a rare metabolic condition that makes her smell like fish.

metabolic

Kelly Fidoe-White, suffers from Trimethylaminuria — a disorder more commonly known as ‘fish-odour syndrome’.
People suffering with the metabolic condition regularly produce a range of strong bodily odours including rotten fish, onion and faeces — Kelly describes her own smell as ‘fishy-oniony’.
Her smell was so potent that at one point Kelly, from Greater Manchester in the UK, was having four showers a day — scrubbing her skin until it was red raw to rid herself of the odour.
After receiving several complaints about her smell at work over the years, the 36-year-old now suffers from severe anxiety and works night shifts at her job as a radiographer to limit the amount of people she is exposed to.
At one stage, Kelly was having four showers a day, changing her uniform twice and using whole cans of deodorant to try and mask the smell — none of which worked.
Kelly said: “Besides the smell itself, there are very few other symptoms at all and of course you have the side effects of anxiety, social isolation — it’s hard.
“As far as I know, this condition affects 300 to 600 people worldwide — it’s not very well known.”

metabolic

Kelly’s condition means her body is unable to break down certain compounds found in foods that contain a substance called choline.
This results in the body disposing these compounds in a person’s sweat, breath and urine instead — emitting the most pungent of smells that Kelly herself cannot detect.
She said: “Having no sense of smell, I don’t know with me what really affects it.
“There is no magic pill that you can take to make it better, I personally take a cocktail of medications.
“One of the things they [the doctors] turn around and say to you is: ‘If it smells going in, it’s going to smell going out.’
“So things like fish and seafood are major triggers.”
Kelly’s lack of smell is an unfortunate coincidence and is not part of the condition.
Despite only receiving a diagnosis two years ago, Kelly doesn’t know whether it was passed to her genetically or she developed it during her later youth.
But she began to notice something was wrong during her early school years.
Kelly said: “There was more than one occasion where I would say: ‘I’ve had fish paste sandwiches for my lunch,’ when kids would say ‘You smell like fish.’
“That was difficult to deal with as a teenager.
“I was spending a stupid amount of time in the shower just before my diagnosis. Using red hot water, scrubbing until my skin was bright red and it was just too stressful.”

metabolic

Kelly’s mother, Sandra Fidoe, added: “The fact that she was bullied about it made it 10 times worse for her and certainly for me. It bothered me.”
Kelly started seeing a doctor in her late teens, but nobody could diagnose her. After researching her symptoms and watching documentaries, she pushed doctors for an answer and was diagnosed with Trimethylaminuria in 2015.
Learning more about her condition led to her discovering that the copious amount of scented deodorants she was using and the relentless showering was actually making her skin react, which caused her odour to be stronger.
Now, Kelly uses Seba-Med body wash, which is PH neutral and much more sensitive for her skin.
She also takes regular medication including; daily B-2 tablets which enhances her body’s ability to metabolise the choline in her diet and Acidophilus, which is a probiotic that rebalances the bacteria throughout the body.
On top of that, she takes Activated Charcoal once a day after she has eaten to clean out her digestive system.
Thankfully for Kelly, she found love online 16 years ago with her now husband, Michael, who she says makes things easier for her.

metabolic

Michael, 45, said: “Kelly’s smell has sometimes affected me in a negative manner but I haven’t said anything to Kelly. I’ve just kept it to myself.
“When we were living together at the start I did notice it.
“But it wasn’t straight away when we first started seeing each other — it was never a problem.
“I don’t believe she tried to hide it either.
“Kelly wasn’t that confident when we first met — and I think the best way of me helping her with the condition is to just be supportive about the condition.
“If that was me living with the condition, I think I would struggle to do as much as Kelly does.”
Kelly added: “Michael has helped me to cope by making me see the funny side of the condition.
“I am sure he won’t mind me saying this, but he produces his own smell anyway!”
Since working night shifts at The Royal Oldham Hospital, Kelly has recently been more open and honest about her condition with her closest work colleagues.
Faysal Bashir works alongside Kelly as a CT/MR radiographer.

metabolic

He said: “You could trace Kelly’s smell up the corridor. It’s quite a strong, distinct smell you get from Kelly.
“When Kelly told me about her condition I didn’t take it in for some reason and so I have always called it ‘fishiyatitus.’
“I have had many complaints about Kelly’s smell to me and from a variety of staff in the department.
“It’s hard when you get these complaints as Kelly is a good friend.
“But working with Kelly for two years as my night buddy means we have a good communication where I could tell her to go and freshen up.”
Asha Feroz, a diagnostic radiographer who also works with Kelly, said: “Certain people do make comments.
“It was upsetting how people were dealing with it and at that point, Kelly wasn’t herself.
“I have got used to the smell. So it doesn’t affect my work at all.”
As much as Kelly’s friends and family have helped her through the hardships she has faced in life, it was the final diagnosis she received that allowed her to start accepting the condition with a sense of closure.
And now Kelly feels confident enough to raise awareness and speak about her condition in the hope that she can destigmatise it and people can tell her what is working to calm the smell.
Kelly said: “From watching documentaries, things started to fall into place and it sounded like it could be me when someone said it’s not just a fish odour.
“And ultimately I ended up being tested and it came back positive.
“I am more chilled about it now. I can’t say that if somebody complains tomorrow, I wouldn’t still find it a little bit cutting.
“But I deal with it by educating that person now.”

Mum-of-five induced early so dying husband could meet their newborn

As the family welcome Savannah — they are forced to say goodbye to their darling dad. Source: YouTube

IF ANYTHING was going to ensure that Mark Aulger would do everything in his power to beat his cancer it was the news that his wife Diane was pregnant with their fifth child.
After eight months of chemotherapy, Mark had been cleared of stage 3 colon cancer and the family had their best Christmas ever.
But on New Year’s Day, Mark collapsed and was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis — a scarring that takes place within the lungs and impedes the flow of oxygen to the brain and other vital organs.
Mark was told by the doctors that he was highly unlikely to meet their baby girl because he only had a week to live.
But his wife Diane was determined that this was not going to happen — so she made the tough decision to forgo her initial plans of having a natural birth and get induced early to give her husband the opportunity to hold their baby before he passed away.
“I thought I would be having her by myself I was very happy — they were going to keep us together for the birth,” his wife Diane says on The Doctors show.
Savannah was born via C-section on January 18 and Mark was the first person to hold the gorgeous little girl. He cradled her for 45 precious minutes.
“When we induced the labour he was in a bed side-by-side with me. For me it was a beautiful day — he was there wide awake and alert for the whole day,” Diane says.
“When the nurse cleaned up the baby and gave her to Mark you could see the complete pain in his eyes — he still talked to her and told her that he was her daddy and that he loved her.”

Mark also got to hold her for a minute the following day before slipping into a coma and then passing away two days later.

“He had been in a coma for about 48 hours and I could see on the monitor that his stats were dropping and he would passing away very soon, so I put her in his arms and held his hand until he stopped breathing.”
Diane wants nothing more than her husband to be by her side to watch their five beautiful children grow and flourish.
“I just miss him — I miss him very much. We were really, really, really in love.”

Britain’s youngest mum pregnant with fiancee, 10 years after her first child was taken away

Tressa Middleton, aged 12, holding her newborn baby girl.

WHEN Tressa Middleton was just 11-years-old, she fell pregnant after her brother raped her.
Nine months later, she became Britain’s youngest mum — giving birth to a healthy baby girl.
When she first announced her pregnancy, she claimed the baby was the result of a drunken accident with a teenager — terrified if her family uncovered the truth.
As her face was splashed on the covers on newspapers and magazines all over the country, it wasn’t until she was 14-years-old that Tressa finally admitted who the father really was, and the baby wasn’t a result of drunken negligence.
Tressa stunned her family when she admitted her older brother Jason, who was 16-year-old at the time, had raped her.
After DNA tests proved he was her baby’s father during a trial in 2009, he was put behind bars for four years.
Tressa was forced to give her baby daughter up for adoption in 2008 — just two years after the baby was born, who would now be the same age she was when she fell pregnant.
Just four years after giving her up, Tressa fell pregnant with her second child when she was 18 with her fiancee, Darren.
But in another tragic turn of circumstances, the baby’s heart stopped beating six months before Tressa’s due date.

“I went to St John’s Hospital in Livingston in the morning,” she told The Sun.
“I had been bleeding and was in agony. They told me there was no heartbeat.”

Tressa with her daughter, who she gave up for adoption two years after giving birth.

Struggling to fall pregnant again, Tressa felt as though she was being punished for letting her firstborn go all those years ago.
Now 23-years-old, the young mother’s despair has turned to joy — after finding out this month that she is expecting with her partner, Darren.
“I’ll never let this one go,” she told The Mirror.
Speaking of the challenge to fall pregnant following the miscarriage, Tressa said “I know it sounds crazy but when I was trying to fall pregnant and it wasn’t happening, I thought the worst.
“Not having my daughter with me still affects me every single day and I thought I was being punished for what happened with her, for letting her go.

Tressa and her partner Darren, had a miscarriage in 2012.

“Discovering I was pregnant was bittersweet. I am so excited about what the future holds and I already love my baby.
“I cannot wait to meet him or her but when both lines on that pregnancy test showed up, although I was happy, I was desperately sad as well. I had a little cry.”
Tressa said that if she had the opportunity, she would get her baby girl back in a heartbeat.
“I am so grateful I am finally going to be the mother I have longed to be all these years,” she said.
“But I don’t ever want my first child to think I abandoned her, or that I am replacing her with this new baby.
“I’d welcome her back tomorrow with open arms if I could and I hope she knows she will always be a part of our family.
“But this is the future for me and I can’t keep looking back. The past has made me even more determined to keep this child and give him or her the best possible life.”
Following her daughter’s adoption, Tressa spent the following three years in and out of care homes, and fell into a life of alcohol and drug abuse.

Tressa and her partner Darren are expecting their first child together, following a miscarriage in 2012.

Tressa said she now sees how young she was when she fell pregnant.
“My little girl is 10 now. She’ll be 11 in the summer almost the same age I was when I fell pregnant,” she said.
“It has made me realise just how young I was when all that happened. At the time I didn’t feel like I was that young because I had already been through so much but now, it makes me feel sick. No child should have that happen.”

The drug that caused almost 40 overdoses in Melbourne

A DRUG that melts plastic and has the nickname “coma in a bottle” has had a devastating impact on Melbourne’s party scene.

GBL is believed to be the cause of almost 40 overdoses in the city on the weekend, with people unknowingly taking the drug, which is a derivative of GHB.
People were being carried away on stretchers one after the other after consuming the potentially fatal substance.
Ambulance Victoria said the fact there were no deaths as a result of drugs at the Electric Parade music festival in Melbourne and the White Night event was “good luck rather than anything else”.
GBL is much the same as GHB and when taken, the body converts GBL into GHB, but it is often more toxic.
“It’s a drug that causes people to become unconscious, slows the heart rate and can cause seizures,” Ambulance Victoria state health commander Paul Holman said.
The Electric Parade festival was “awash with drugs” and there was a serious risk of death.
“It’s the highest number of overdoses we have seen at a music event for some time,” he said.

Bottle of GBL, also known as coma in a bottle.

GHB and GBL are often taken by people who want to lose their inhibitions or experience a mild euphoric and relaxed feeling. It also helps you sleep and can be used as a supplement when body building.

According to the World Health Organisation, Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), is a solvent found in paint strippers, nail polish remover, stain removers and circuit board cleaners.
It’s known on the street as midnight blue, blue nitro and paint stripper and it’s most commonly taken orally in a liquid form.
The substance can also come in a powder and it is mostly dissolved in drinks.
GBL has similar effects to GHB but can cause psychosis, paranoia, hallucinations, loss of body control and irregular heart rhythms.
GBL can be easier to obtain than heroin and even easier to overdose on. GBL can be made with a number of legal chemicals that can be found in your garage.
It can be purchased online easily and is often marketed as a cleaning agent.
Forensic toxicologist at Safework Laboratories, Andrew Leibie, said he first saw the drug in the early 2000s but it was not common in Australia.

Queensland woman Dianne Brimble died after ingesting GHB.

He said it was not a drug popular in rave and festival scenes and is more traditionally a date rape drug.
“It’s odourless, colourless and typically available as a liquid,” he told news.com.au.
“It has a strong amnesiac effect and causes disinhibition and makes you up for anything.
“It mixes very badly with alcohol, even if you just have one or two drinks.”
Mr Leibie said it was harder for police to detect GHB because they were mostly looking for methamphetamine or ecstasy and MDMA.
GHB is also known as “liquid fantasy” and was the drug that killed Dianne Brimble in 2002 while she was on a P&O cruise ship.
After an inquest into her death in 2010, it was determined she was unknowingly drugged.
Mr Leibie said it was very hard to manage the liquid doses of GHB and GBL and large doses could kill.
GHB and GBL only stay in your system for about two days and Mr Leibie said it would not be detected in a roadside drug test.
If drug testing was legalised in Australia, Mr Leibie said there’d even need to be very specialised equipment to detect it.
Alcohol and Drug Foundation spokeswoman Ilka Burnham-King said it was clear we were running out of ideas to reduce harm and drug overdoses.
“We can’t keep drugs out of a festival and our options are running out. We could ban festivals, but people are still going to take drugs so it just displaces the issue,” she said.
Ms Burnham-King believes Victoria should introduce drug testing to see if we can produce the same results here as overseas.
Drug testing has been in place in other countries for years, and has significantly decreased the number of overdoses and drug deaths.
“It’s not a radical idea, it’s been happening for years and years and not only does it save lives, but it gives data around the drugs people are taking and what’s emerging,” she said.
“If somebody tested drugs we would have seen in the system there was a dodgy batch of GHB and put out a warning.”
Ms Burnham-King said this was a nationwide problem and we needed to make a change before more people were killed by drugs.
“If you always do what you’ve always done then you always get what you’ve always got,” she said.
“What is it going to take until both sides of government realise they don’t have any other options available than trialling drug testing?
“It has proved to work overseas so let’s trial it here.”

A man is taken to hospital after overdosing on GHB in Melbourne. Picture: Jason Edwards

Ms Burnham-King said Australia used to be progressive when it came to drug harm reduction.
“We introduced the needle exchange, but right now, we are seriously behind the times when it comes to drug policy.”
Ms Burnham-King said drug testing was controversial because some believed it would encourage people to take them.
“Australia doesn’t need any encouragement to take drugs. We are the number one ecstasy user in the world and in the top three for other drugs,” she said.
“We have an insatiable appetite and this war against drugs, expecting people not to take drugs hasn’t worked, so what do we do differently that minimises harm and prevents fatalities?”
A man rang 3AW on Monday morning and said he had some experience with GHB.
“On my first date ever with my current partner, we were out at a nightclub and she had her drink spiked with it,” he said.
“Within minutes she was limp, couldn’t stand up and really not in a good way. By time I got her in a cab and got her home her eyes started rolling into the back of her head and she was having small little fits.”
After he got his partner to the hospital, they were told she consumed GHB and as she mixed it with alcohol, it could have killed her.
She only had a drop of GHB, about a millilitre to a millilitre and a half.
Police have cast doubt over the future of the Electric Parade music festival where dozens of revellers were treated for the serious drug overdoses.
Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane says police will meet with organisers of the festival to discuss whether they should be allowed to host future events after a number of revellers were left in a critical condition on Saturday.
“(We will determine) whether they should be allowed access to another venue,” Mr Leane said.
Mr Leane says police will also be speaking with management at Sidney Myer Music Bowl, where the festival was held, and City of Melbourne over the event which clashed with the scheduling of the similarly “high risk” event, White Night.
Police Minister Lisa Neville said organisers needed to have good security and send out the right messages to concertgoers.
“Police will be working with the organisers of these events — we need to make sure that the organisers are also stepping up to ensure that we are reducing access and the availability of these drugs,” she told reporters on Monday.
Ms Neville ruled out pill testing at such events, saying testing would not change “the fact these drugs are bad for you and they are illegal in Victoria.”

Few of these brands kicked off major works towards the end of 2016 with some launching stunning campaigns/edit with impressive (enough) pieces giving a peek into what could be in the offing -but certainly improving with each creation showing there's a whole lot more where the last came from!

5 super useful gadgets everyone who loves to bake should own

If you're an aspiring baker or just love to bake for the fun of it, then this article should be of particular interest to you.

particular interest to you.png

It's that time of the week when we usher in the weekend with useful tips and tricks to tide kitchen lovers through the weekend.
If you're an aspiring baker or just love to bake for the fun of it, then this article should be of particular interest to you.
Having the right tools in the kitchen can make cooking/baking less stressful and more fun, which is why we're sharing 5 essential gadgets every baker should have in their kitchen, courtesy Buzz Feed.
Check them out.

1. Rolling pin and marble pastry board: Preferably it should be a tapered French style rolling pin without handles as it provides more control of the dough than the ones with handles. Marble pastry boards are ideal  as  puff pastry doughs have to stay cold so the butter doesn’t get too soft and break through the dough.
2. Mixer: This goes without saying, it's important to have a good mixer for all your batter mixing. It's equally important to invest in one of good quality so it can last for a very long time.

3. Decorating tip and disposable decorating bags: For all those fancy cup cake designs, you definitely need these guys.

4. Oven thermometer: This is very useful to gauge the exact temperature of your oven so you don't end up with burnt baked goods

5. Digital scale: Not unlike the oven thermometer, this is also ideal for exact measurement, of weight this time.

Pay your wife's alimony with pizza not money - Judge rules

The 50-year old; referred to as NT in local reports, also happens to be a pizza maker, and was required as part of a divorce settlement to make a monthly payment of €300 (about N70,000) in child support to his ex-wife.

Judge rules.png

In a strange, albeit humorous twist of events, a judge in Italy has ruled in favour of a man paying his wife's alimony, not with money but pizza.
According to Munchies, citing a local Italian news report, a court in Padua ruled in favour of a divorced father's paying alimony to his ex-wife exclusively in the form of pizza.
The 50-year old; referred to as NT in local reports, also happens to be a pizza maker, and was required as part of a divorce settlement to make a monthly payment of €300 (about N70,000) in child support to his ex-wife.

He however thought it would be fair to pay the alimony with his edible wares rather than cash, an idea his ex-wife rejected and took him to court for.
Unfortunately for the ex-wife the judge - Judge Chiara Bitozziruled in favor of the father and found him not guilty of non-payment of child support.
In the ruling, the judge stated that the pizza maker did not earn enough money to make full payments in actual cash, and as such, it was acceptable for him to pay for the alimony entirely in pizza.
It however remains unknown what type of pizza the man will be giving as alimony payments.

If you plan on travelling this summer, then rest assured this is the ultimate etiquette guide to lead you through your trip.
There's nothing more annoying than the obnoxious traveller who exhibits little or no regard for their host country's customs.
To avoid being that 'ugly tourist' this summer, here are 5 'ugly behaviours' you should avoid as you travel this summer.
1. Don't keep asking for 'spice' or 'pepper', a common habit with Nigerian tourists, give the spice a break and try out new dishes. Also, don't complain about the food portions, or taste for that matter. You're in a new country, so keep an open mind and try out new dishes.

2. Do understand the dressing style of your host country. If you're going to Dubai for instance, remember to dress conservative lest you attract the wrong type of attention to yourself.
3. Don't keep asking for prices in naira or converting everything back to naira. Asking is just plain annoying and since the exchange rates are not the best right now, save yourself the stress and heart break by allocating  a reasonable budget to everything and quit converting everything back to naira.
4. Do make an attempt to speak the local language. Don't just go straight to speaking English, learn how to say hello in the local language and proceed with that.
5. Don't mock the customs and traditions of your host country. Even if you don't understand them, or don't agree with them, don't be condescending.

travelling to Europe this summer

It's not uncommon for countries to warn their citizens about the potential risks involved with travelling to countries owing to security or even health concerns.
This time, the United States has issued a travel warning to its citizens about travelling to Europe this summer.
According to the US state department, there is a "risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation"
Ending on on August 31, 2016, the alert goes on to say that "the large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events."
France is set to play host to the month-long Euro Cup this July, which is a month-long series of football tournaments that rival the World Cup and Olympics in terms of attention.
Also, Poland will host the Catholic Church's World Youth Day this July as well. Both events could therefore be susceptible to attacks, according to the statement.
The travel warning is coming on the heels of terror attacks in France and Brussels in earlier months.

It's the battle of the airlines these days as various carriers attempt to out-do each other with in-flight entertainment.
Just when we were still drooling over Virgin Airways' new luxury business class cabin, United Airlines has also joined suit in releasing photos of their all-new business class cabin.

Called Polaroid, United Airlines describes the new business class cabin as an "experience" which is “the airline’s most significant product transformation in more than a decade.”
The new design features suite-like pods that offer easy access to the aisle, lie-flat seats with up to 6’6” of bed space, mood lighting, lumbar support, storage areas and more.
Speaking on the new cabin, Oscar Munoz, president and CEO of United said “United Polaris will change the game in international business travel with an exceptional level of relaxation and comfort throughout our customers’ journeys”

The airline added in a statement that it "conducted more than 12,000 hours of research, and sleep emerged as the single most important priority for international business class travelers,”
To this end, there is in-cabin mood lighting, plenty of room to sleep, new blankets, pillows, pajamas and slippers.
The move is clearly an attempt to put United's premium offerings on par with the best in the world, namely Gulf carriers, and win back premium fliers.
To complement the business seat offerings, United is also opening nine premium lounges around the world, with “custom-designed chairs, private daybeds, spa-like showers and chef-inspired hot meals.”
The seats will debut on the airline's 777-300ER in December while the first business class lounge will open at Chicago O'Hare on December 1st, 2016.
Last week, news made round that United Airlines was suspending its Lagos-Houston route from June 30th owing to lack of demand.
