THEY say timing is everything. And that could not be more true for New York-based Sydney model Ethan Turnbull.

Turnbull

Turnbull, 24, moved to the Big Apple to further his modelling career ... and gained global exposure for saving drowning teenagers from the pond in Central Park.

Buff and tanned Turnbull has been given the sort of instantaneous celebrity anyone launching a modelling career could only dream of.

He was labelled a “hero” after he and his mate, Los Angeles-raised model Bennett Jonas, 23, pulled the group of teens — including one who was unconscious — to safety after they fell into the ice-covered lake.
Turnbull1

“The fame is new and I’m not 100 per cent sure how to deal with it,” Turnbull told News Corp Australia.
“I definitely don’t think I’m a hero ... I was in the right place, at the right time.”
Turnbull and Jonas saw the seven teens taking selfies on the ice before they fell through it, and became submerged in the freezing water around 6pm Monday, local time.
“We were going over there to tell them to get off ... and ended up going in there to get them out,” Turnbull said.
“I got in (to the water) and my fingertips went numb and I got an ache in my hips ... because it was so cold. It was absolutely freezing.”

The DIY rescue lasted around 20 minutes, Turnbull said, “from seeing them fall in to being ushered up to the ambulance”.
“But in the actual water, I was probably in for a minute.”
Since news broke of the dramatic rescue, Turnbull — who has only been living in New York for two-and-a-half months — has become hot property online. He now has 120,000 followers on Instagram — a figure that is climbing.
But he said the attention he’s received since the incident has been “confronting”.

“I’ve been contacted from every angle, from friends and family, and randoms from my Instagram, with love and support for what I did,” Turnbull said.
Turnbull, who describes himself as a “go-getter”, moved to the East Village after travelling back and forth between Sydney and New York for the last two years. He’s spent recent weeks attending castings for commercial shoots and his social media feed suggests his specialty is posing shirtless.
“I’m just here to try and see what works and see what happens,” Turnbull said of his ambitions.
“I’d love to go on The Ellen Show and meet the children. That would be an honour.
“There’s two kinds of models — there’s the commercial and high fashion.

“The commercial tend to do the body stuff, like Bonds, for example, then the high fashion guys might walk for Prada.
“Hopefully, I might be able to do both. We’ll wait and see.”

Turnbull has already gained a celebrity following, including Today co-host Lisa Wilkinson, who was clearly impressed by his looks.
“He is quite the dish,” Today newsreader Deborah Knight said, to which Wilkinson agreed, “he certainly is”. Wilkinson then said she had been “sidetracked” by Turnbull’s buff Instagram photos on Today.
“If you’re a hot-blooded woman under the age of 25, I’d suggest following him on Instagram,” Wilkinson said.
So what did Turnbull make of it? “I found that quite funny, actually,” Turnbull said.
“I’d love to see her face-to-face and actually have a chat to her rather than let her sit there ‘gushing’ ... over my Instagram.”

A Mexican man believed to be the world’s most obese plans to undergo gastric bypass in the new year and reduce his 590 kilos (1,300 pounds) by half, his doctor said Wednesday.
world-obese-man

The man known as Juan Pedro has diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic lung obstruction, and needs to reduce his weight dramatically to reduce his health risks, doctor Jose Castaneda Cruz said.

He said the man, who does not give his family names to media, would actually undergo a couple procedures along the way.

“It’s surgery that is going to be done in two parts. That is because of the high risk of complications he faces. So it’s going to be done in two parts, six months apart,” Castaneda told reporters.

In the first procedure, surgeons will remove more than three-quarters of the patient’s stomach.

And in the second procedure, his remaining stomach will be partially blocked, helping to give a feeling of fullness. Juan Pedro would also undergo intestinal surgery, his doctor said.

Castaneda wants him to lose 59 kilos in the first six months, which alone reduces his risk of obesity-related cancer by 52 percent.

Juan Pedro, 32, has a good chance of losing half his body weight by about six months after his first surgery, according to his medical team.

“Slowly but surely, I’ll get there,” Juan Pedro told reporters.

President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday named billionaire Carl Icahn, a vocal critic of what he calls government overregulation, to serve as a special advisor to overhaul “strangling regulations.”
Donald-Trump_--e1480169054854

He also tapped Peter Navarro, an outspoken China critic, to head the White House National Trade Council, a new office that will oversee trade and industrial policy, in the latest sign he is moving ahead with plans to overhaul US economic policy.

The 80-year-old Icahn, known as an aggressive, activist investor, will not serve as a government employee, will receive no salary and will not be bound by ethics rules requiring him to divest his investments.

He said President Obama had crippled America’s business owners with what he says is more than $1 trillion in new regulations and over 750 billion hours dealing with paperwork. “It’s time to break free of excessive regulation and let our entrepreneurs do what they do best: create jobs and support communities,” he said.

Icahn is already reported to have helped Trump pick candidates to fill his cabinet, including a climate-change denier to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Carl was with me from the beginning and with his being one of the world’s great businessmen, that was something I truly appreciated,” Trump said in a statement.

“He is not only a brilliant negotiator, but also someone who is innately able to predict the future especially having to do with finances and economies,” the real estate billionaire added. “His help on the strangling regulations that our country is faced with will be invaluable.”

Trump’s appointment of Narvarro signals he is also moving to reshape relations with China after having heightened rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies with a series of snubs and criticisms.

A professor at the University of California, Irvine, Navarro’s books include “Death by China,” in which he criticizes Beijing for waging economic war by subsidizing its manufacturing industry and blocking American imports.

– No government experience –

Trump’s promise to return US manufacturing jobs that have moved abroad by cutting federal regulation and attacking what describes as unfair competition from China provided a central pillar of his campaign platform.

He described Navarro as “a visionary economist” in a statement, saying the brash investor would “develop trade policies that shrink our trade deficit, expand our growth and help stop the exodus of jobs from our shores.”

Like many of Trump’s picks for his future administration, both Navarro and Icahn are staunch loyalists of the divisive president-elect who have no experience in government.

Icahn is a New York City native like Trump. He began his career on Wall Street in 1961, and has held substantial or controlling stakes in numerous American companies over the years, including RJR Nabisco, Texaco, Philips Petroleum, Western Union, Gulf & Western, Viacom, Revlon, Time Warner, Motorola, Chesapeake Energy, Dell, Netflix, Apple and eBay.

He also owned the last glitzy Trump casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Trump Taj Mahal, until it finally failed and closed last month after going through two bankruptcy reorganizations since it opened in 1990.

Icahn took over the casino in 2014, but said it had lost $350 million over just a few short years.

President-elect Donald Trump said Saturday that he would pay $25 million to settle lawsuits over alleged fraud at Trump University because he is focused on leading the country, dismissing any hint of guilt.
Donald-Trump

In a sharp about-turn after years of refusing to settle, the real estate billionaire said the amount was a good deal and insisted he would have won the cases had they gone to trial.

“I settled the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of the potential award because as President I have to focus on our country,” he tweeted.

“The ONLY bad thing about winning the Presidency is that I did not have the time to go through a long but winning trial on Trump U. Too bad!” he added.

A trio of suits brought by former students in New York and California alleged that the Trump training program — which was not an accredited college or university, and operated from 2005 to 2011 — fleeced students by tricking them with aggressive marketing.

Students paid as much as $35,000 to enroll, wrongly believing they would make it big in real estate after being taught by what the Manhattan mogul described as experts he had hand-picked, the suits said.

Trump’s lawyers had countered for years that many students had given the program a thumbs-up and those who failed to succeed had only themselves to blame.

But with the president-elect apparently seeking to put the thorny matter to rest as he builds his cabinet, a deal was reached.

“Today’s $25 million settlement agreement is a stunning reversal by Donald Trump and a major victory for the over 6,000 victims of his fraudulent university,” New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said.

A spokesperson for Schneiderman’s office said the settlement covers all three class-action lawsuits against Trump University: two in California dating to 2010 and one in New York filed in 2013.

Robert Guillo, a 76-year-old New Yorker who spent nearly $40,000 on tuition alongside his son, previously told AFP that the program was an “absolute scam.”

“I learned absolutely nothing,” he said. “He fooled me for $35,000.”

A Coalition of Nigeria Muslim Women under the auspices of Women in Da’awah, has spent N3.5 million to empower Internally Displaced Persons in FCT with various skills.
IDPs

The Vice Ameera of the group, Mrs Ramatu Sani, announced this at the graduation of 184 IDPs from its skills acquisition Programme on Saturday in Abuja.

She said the fund was used in organising various skills acquisition trainings  and the purchase of sewing, shoes and bag making machines for the IDPs in Durumi and Kuchigoro camps.

According to her, out of the N3.5 million, the Women in Da’awah contributed N2.5 million, while Media Trust donated the sum of N1 million respectively.

She listed other skills acquisition offered the IDPs to include cellphone repairs, bead making, soap and pomade making among others.

Sani said it was the responsibility of every believer to assist people who were affected by one form of disaster or the other because government alone could not do it.

“We are here to touch the lives of people, who are in dire need of assistance, especially women who are displaced.

“Once you empower a woman, you have empowered the society,” she said.

She appealed to well-spirited Nigerians to support the IDPs to better their lot with a view to ensure their reintegration back to their destination.

The case is scheduled to go to trial later this month and Trump is expected to testify in his own defence.

55777c0407c8c16b0d6e736f3902e9b4ebb29de6

U.S. Federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel, on Thursday in San Diego, California, largely sided with plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit against President-elect Donald Trump over the defunct Trump University.

The case is scheduled to go to trial later this month and Trump is expected to testify in his own defence against allegations that Trump University for-profit business seminars were a hoax and hundreds of individuals were charged large sums of money for courses that were essentially worthless.

Judge Curiel ruled against Trump’s legal team seeking to ban testimony relating to Trump’s conduct during the presidential campaign.

Mr. Curiel also ruled against Trump’s request to ban testimony about Trump University’s "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau and the fact that it has since gone bankrupt.

He also denied a request by Trump’s lawyers to ban discussion of the financial condition of students, many of whom described themselves as poor, and what impact the seminar fees had on their lives.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers argued testimony about the presidential campaign, and testimony about the other elements of the case are irrelevant and would serve to colour the jury’s opinion of Mr. Trump and his business venture.

Mr. Curiel ruled in favour of allowing Trump’s defence team to call students who would tell "success stories" about how the courses improved their understanding of business and real estate.

Mr. Trump has steadfastly defended Trump University as a worthwhile investment for participants. The courses promised to offer students inside information on how he built his business.

In a technical ruling, Mr. Curiel found insufficient evidence or supporting case law to warrant granting Mr. Trump’s other requests, though he said Mr.
Trump’s lawyers could object to individual pieces of testimony during the trial.

The trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 28.

– Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg has addressed some rumours surrounding his business
– Facebook is facing criticism that fake news on Facebook aided the rise of Donald Trump
– Zuckerberg has strongly defended his network

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg has addressed criticisms that fake news on
Facebook aided the rise of the United States of America President-elect, Donald Trump.

Zuckerberg who addressed the issue while speaking at a technology conference in California, said Facebook should not be held responsible.

His words: “The idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea.

“If you believe that then I don’t think you have internalised the message Trump supporters are trying to send in this election.”
He continued: “My goal, and what I care about, is giving people the power to share so we can make the world more open and connected. That requires building a good version of News Feed.

We still have work to do on that. We’re going to keep improving it.

“On the community guidelines, I think as norms change and people want to see more news, I think we’ll have to continue to evolve the guidelines to reflect the value that the community holds.”

According to the BBC, some data has shown that fake stories were being far more widely shared on the platform than follow up stories debunking the claims.

For an increasing number of people, particularly Americans, Facebook is becoming the primary source of news coverage.

The site’s News Feed is specifically designed to show users content it thinks will be of most interest, creating what some describe as a “filter bubble” that reinforces a person’s view without injecting differences in opinion.

Interestingly, earlier this year, Facebook was accused of being anti-Trump after it was alleged its human moderators were favouring liberal stories appearing in people’s “trending stories” box.

While denying that claim, the site did sack its human team, instead relying solely on an algorithm to determine which stories were shown to be most popular.

As a consequence, stories which were later proved entirely false appeared on the timelines of a large number of users.

Six months ago, Zuckerberg attacked Trump’s stance on immigration in a speech about Facebook’s future.

Meanwhile, an upstate New York woman, Margot Gerster bumped into Mrs Hillary Clinton while she was hiking through the woods in New York.

The incident happened just a day after Clinton lost to Trump and Gerster shared it on her Facebook page.

Turkey detained on Friday the head of the board of opposition daily Cumhuriyet, which saw nine of its staff arrested last week, the newspaper said.

Recep-Erdogan-e1469210801896-696x576

Akin Atalay was taken into custody at Istanbul’s airport after arriving from Germany, said Cumhuriyet, which has in recent years taken a strong line against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).

He was targeted by a warrant that was part of a probe into “terrorist activities”, and was ushered into a police vehicle that was waiting for him on the tarmac.

Nine of the paper’s staff, including its current editor-in-chief, were remanded in custody at the weekend pending trial after raids that have added to growing international alarm about media freedoms in Turkey.

The exiled former editor-in-chief, Can Dundar, fled to Germany earlier this year while appealing against a near six-year jail term for revealing state secrets.

Some 35,000 people have been arrested and tens of thousands more have lost their jobs — including military officers, judges, teachers, civil servants and journalists — in a sweeping crackdown in the wake of the failed July bid to oust Erdogan.

Melania Trump threatened People Magazine and a former staff reporter with legal action late Thursday over “false and completely fictionalised” statements in the writer’s account of Donald Trump forcing himself on her during a 2005 interview.

Melania-Trump

The Republican presidential candidate’s wife denied that she encountered or conversed with writer Natasha Stoynoff in New York, tweeting a letter from her lawyer demanding a “prominent retraction and apology” of certain statements in the article, and threatening that Melania would otherwise “consider her legal options.”

“The true facts are these: Mrs Trump did not encounter Ms Stoynoff on the street, nor have any conversation with her,” lawyer Charles Harder wrote. “The two are not friends and were never friends or even friendly.”

His law firm requested that People and Stoynoff confirm within 24 hours that the demands were being met, saying “failure to do so will require Mrs Trump to consider her legal options.”

The letter did not dispute Stoynoff’s allegations that Donald Trump forcibly kissed her during an interview for an article to mark his wedding anniversary with his then-pregnant third wife Melania in 2005.

“I turned around, and within seconds he was pushing me against the wall and forcing his tongue down my throat,” Stoynoff wrote, an account the Republican White House hopeful vehemently denied.

“These vicious claims about me of inappropriate conduct with women are totally and absolutely false,” he told a rally in West Palm Beach Thursday.

At least six women have accused the New York mogul of making unwanted physical advances in accounts reported by The New York Times, NBC, People Magazine and others, most of them after he asserted during Sunday’s presidential debate with his democratic rival Hillary Clinton that he had never sexually assaulted a woman.

He said his lawyers were preparing a lawsuit against The New York Times — which published the accounts of two women who accused him of groping and kissing them — unless the paper retracts its article.

In her People story, Stoynoff said she asked to be taken off the “Trump beat,” but later ran into the real estate magnate’s wife in New York.

“That winter, I actually bumped into Melania on Fifth Avenue, in front of Trump Tower as she walked into the building, carrying baby Barron,” Stoynoff said. “‘Natasha, why don’t we see you anymore?’ (Melania Trump) asked, giving me a hug. I was quiet and smiled, telling her I’d missed her, and I squeezed little Barron’s foot.”

The potential first lady’s lawyer Charles Harder also represented former wrestler Hulk Hogan in his successful lawsuit against Gawker Media, which resulted in a $140 million jury award against the entertainment website for releasing a sex tape featuring Hogan and a friend’s wife.

Hillary Clinton has accused her Republican presidential rival Donald Trump of “stalking” her during their televised debate on Sunday.

Democratic-presidential-nominee-Hillary-Clinton-e1476442821231

Trump often stood closely behind the Democratic nominee glowering as she answered questions from the audience during the town hall-style event in St. Louis.

Speaking during an interview on NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show set to air Friday, Clinton said his movements made her feel “really weird” on stage.

“Because of the revelation of the public video, and everything that came out on ‘Access Hollywood,’ you know, he was really all wrought up, and you could just sense how much anger he had,” Clinton said, referring to a video leaked last week showing Trump making lewd comments about women.

“And so he was really trying to dominate and then literally stalk me around the stage and I would just feel this presence behind me.”

Trump rejected criticism about his debate performance at a rally on Monday.

“So I’m standing at my podium by my chair. She walks across the room. She’s standing in front of me, right next to me,” he said.

“And the next day I said what did the papers say? They said, ‘he invaded her space.'”

“Believe me,” he added, “The last space that I want to invade is her space.”

Last week’s video showed Trump boasting in 2005 of groping women with impunity because he was famous, sending the White House race into unprecedented levels of vulgarity.

Since then, at least six women have accused him of making unwanted physical advances, most of them after Trump asserted in Sunday’s debate that he had never sexually assaulted a woman.

During her interview, Clinton praised First Lady Michelle Obama for blasting the Republican nominee in a powerful tirade on Thursday.

“The speech that she gave, I think, put into words what so many people are feeling,” Clinton said. “And not just women and girls. Men and boys.”

She also said she didn’t notice making a much-commented shimmy motion during Sunday’s debate when Trump accused her of not having the “right temperament” to be president.

“Now people are always saying, ‘Do the shimmy, do the shimmy.'”

Tinubu said he never wanted to become Buhari's Vice President. It turns out he never wanted Osinbajo either

Tinubu

Speaking at the 7th annual Bola Tinubu colloquium in 2015, the Bourdillon Godfather denied he ever put himself forward as President Muhammadu Buhari's running mate before the general elections.

“They said I connived and conspired my way into the VP seat. They lied so easily that it was the price I extracted from General Buhari to support his bid. If not, I would destroy the party on the altar of my ambitions", said Tinubu.

“They were wrong. I pulled myself out of contention. The very brilliant and capable Professor Yemi Osinbajo became our VP candidate. A man of integrity and impeccable character. Alas, this sent Jonathan’s henchmen into disarray. In the quiet of their private closet, even they could see clearly enough through the darkness of their own hearts to recognize that our ticket was so much better than theirs,” the Jagaban of Borgu (as he's fondly called by admirers) added.

To be fair, there was nothing wrong with Tinubu lobbying to be Nigeria's Vice President. The position was there for the taking and he had worked his socks off in forging the alliance that gave birth to the then opposition APC.

Tinubu is allowed some ambition like all of humanity.

As Governor of Lagos, Tinubu made sure the nation's commercial capital wasn't dragged into the PDP under Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo who railroaded the South West with 'Amala and Gbegiri' politics. Tinubu stopped Obasanjo in his tracks and adroitly so.

To his credit, Lagos, with its near 20 million voters, remained under the AD and then the AC, ACN.  Tinubu was pivotal in ensuring most of the South West remained under the 'progressives' canopy well into the 2015 electoral contests.

Buhari, Tinubu APC leader never wanted Osinbajo

Tinubu's school of politics also produced class,
cerebral acts in Babatunde Fashola, Kayode Fayemi, Adams Oshiomhole, Rauf Aregbesola and Akinwunmi Ambode, among a host of others.

The aforementioned have gone on to hold their own in Nigeria's present political and administrative firmament. They all are some of APC's shining lights at the moment.

It is said of Tinubu that he's got an eye for spotting and tapping talent; and it's difficult to argue with that assertion on the basis of some of the administrators he's sired.

Therefore, with the APC on the cusp of winning its first presidential election last year, Tinubu had every right to stake a claim to the Vice Presidential slot after Buhari had emerged the standard-bearer.

However, as the allegations regarding his interest as Buhari's number two man picked up steam last year, Tinubu and his camp denied he nursed a Vice Presidential ambition. The Jagaban was quick to tell anyone that he sacrificed his ambition for the good of the APC.

Talk of good, old altruism.

Tinubu shakes hands with Oyegun during book launch

Except that that wasn't the true picture, we've now found out.

New revelations have emerged to the effect that Tinubu's version of events may not be the entire story or the true picture of what transpired.

A new book titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria,’  by Professor John Paden, suggest Tinubu not only desperately lobbied to be Buhari's running mate prior to the election, he was also vehemently opposed to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's consideration for the position.

The book was launched in Abuja on Monday, with Tinubu, Buhari and other top APC faithful like the party's embattled chairman, John Oyegun, in attendance.

Here's the author's account of events:

"With Buhari coming from the North-West geopolitical zone, the Vice-Presidency had been ceded to the South-West geopolitical zone.

"Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and political ‘godfather’ of the South-West geopolitical zone, felt he should be the vice-presidential candidate.

"His protégée and the then popular Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, was also a possible candidate.

"Both Tinubu and Fashola were Muslims, which complicated the national balance.

"A third candidate, Yemi Osinbajo, had been Attorney General of Lagos State and a senior law professor and a pastor.

"When the three names were forwarded to Buhari, he chose Osinbajo despite enormous pressure from Tinubu."

What this tells us is simple: the presidential ticket had to have religious balance like everything else in Nigeria, to have any chance of flying.

With Buhari, Tinubu and Fashola being Muslims, the APC would have shot itself in the foot politically by fielding the duo, even before the first ballot was cast in anger.

Tinubu shares a laugh with Buhari

During the book launch, Tinubu admitted as much: "There was the sticky issue of selecting a running mate. After careful study and discussion, it was agreed that we should field a religiously-balanced ticket given the sensitiveness of the moment."

It was only on the basis of this, then, that Tinubu must have considered himself out of the running, albeit grudgingly.

Enter Yemi Osinbajo--relatively young, a cerebral law professor, member of the clergy and looking the part. For many, once his name came up for vetting as Buhari's possible running mate, there should have been no debate.

Paden's book however tells us that Tinubu wasn't sold on Osinbajo and that Buhari made the Osinbajo choice in spite of Tinubu's resistance:

"Buhari chose Osinbajo despite enormous pressure from Tinubu", not to do so, Paden wrote.

Touche.

Osinbajo had stated during a separate event earlier in the week, that he became Vice President only because God interferred.

“The reason why I, Yemi Osinbajo, without asking for a position, was given the vice-presidency of this nation is because God’s hand is in this business.

“And so, I am completely confident that despite where we are today, it is the dawn of a new beginning.

“It has begun to show and surely there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel", said  Nigeria's Vice President.

All of that "Jagaban didn't want to be Vice President or he would have gotten it" grandstanding from Tinubu's supporters, should be buried and eternally so.

Conclusion: Tinubu wanted the Vice Presidency gig and he had every right to throw his hat into the ring. But coming forward to say he never wanted the job from the outset, was really beyond the pale--even for him.

Jibrin was suspended by the House on September 28 after he accused Dogara of padding the 2016 budget.

Dogara of padding

Former Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin has said that his suspension by the House doesn’t affect the budget padding allegations he raised.

Jibrin was suspended by the House on Wednesday, September 28, after he accused Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and other principal officers of padding the 2016 budget.

“But what is very important also is that now they have done their worst, they have suspended me, what has it changed? Has it changed the fact that the speaker conspired with other principal officers to divert N40 billion out of N100 billion meant for constituency projects,” Jibrin told journalists on Wednesday.

“Has it changed the fact that he inserted fraudulent projects worth 20 billion? Has it changed the fact that he diverted multi-million naira project to his personal farm?

“Has it changed the fact that he tried to use the running cost — money meant for running the offices of members — for a questionable mortgage? Has it changed the fact that he diverted FGN project to his farm.

“The most important thing is that Nigerians saw the entire process, how the motion was passed and what transpired at the level of the ethics committee and entirely the process was flawed and for me it’s a non-issue and complete nonsense and it is not going to stand anywhere in the world.

“As you are aware the matter is a subject of litigation. I have instructed my lawyer, Femi Falana SAN to file charges of contempt against Speaker Dogara and of course the house of representatives and I’m sure the matter will move over to the judiciary and decision will be taken. I’m pretty sure it will be in my favour.

“At this point, I must say they freed me up to concentrate on the matter in court; I know the suspension is not going to stand. Secondly, I’m going into a massive alliance with civil society groups, NGOs and well-meaning Nigerian to continue to press ahead.

“I have said it, not once, not twice that it is not going to be easy. I’m not worried about myself but I am more worried about people around me.

“I think this is a big issue; I’m fighting a group of mafia, and I know what they can do. The battle I’m fighting is what Nigerians have always wanted to do in the last 16 years when democracy came to bare, to open the house of representatives and I’m determined to ensure that justice is served on Speaker Dogara and the corrupt body of principal officers and beyond that, reforms are implemented so we can have a house that Nigerians will be proud of," he added.

Jibrin started making the allegations in July after he was sacked from the position of Appropriation Committee chair.

Femi Kuti made the comments while speaking during a performance at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos.

Popular musician, Femi Kuti has criticized Senate President, Bukola Saraki for joining calls for the sale of national assets to end the current recession.

Femi Kuti, the son of music icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made the comments while speaking during a performance at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos.

“Even Saraki too was talking…Saraki this APC criminal that is in court. He wants to use the money he has stolen or his father stole to buy Nigeria from us," Kuti said.
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

The musician also condemned billionaire, Aliko Dangote over the call to sell assets saying that the businessman wants to own Nigeria.

“Now Dangote has said he wants to buy Nigeria from us, and they’re contemplating it, they’re discussing it. One man wants to own everything…Let’s kuku (just) call it the Federal Republic of Dangote,” Kuti said.

Saraki had, on Tuesday, September 20, urged the executive arm of government to raise funds from assets sales and other sources to build up foreign reserves.

“The Executive must raise capital from asset sales and other sources to shore up the foreign reserves. This will calm investors, discourage currency speculation and stabilise the economy,” the Senate President said.

“The measures should include part sale of the NLNG Limited; reduction of government’s shares in upstream oil joint venture operations; sale of government’s stake in financial institutions e.g. Africa Finance Corporation; and the privatisation and concession of major/regional airports and refineries,” he added.

Dangote, on the other hand, made the call for the sale of assets while speaking during an interview with CNBC Africa‘s Wole Famurewa.

The Presidency had blamed the reckless incident on an "ambitious" staff, saying the matter would be investigated and the offender punished accordingly.

Nigerians on Twitter have condemned President Muhammadu Buhari for plagiarising the President Barack Obama's 2008 victory speech.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, had on Friday, September 16, admitted that the paragraph nine of Buhari's speech at the 'Change Begins With Me' campaign launch was a 'copy and paste' of Obama's 2008 speech.

He blamed the reckless insertion on the error of an ambitious staff in the Presidency, saying the matter would be investigated and the offender punished accordingly.

Al though, multiple sources say, the erred staff has been identified and sacked.

Nonetheless, Nigerians have continued to mock the President, describing the incident as embarrassing and hypocritical of the leader demanding 'Change' from his followers.

With the harsh tag #TheStolenSpeech, which is currently trending on the microblogging site Twitter, some said the Presidency did not take responsibility until BBC reported the plagiarism story.

It also emerged that Buhari's popular quote from his 2015 inauguration speech - "I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody" was copied from Charles de Gaulle's 1958 speech.

Charles de Gaulle was a French army officer and statesman. He was the leader of Free France and the head of the Provisional Government of the French Republic.

The naval chief said that the operations, carried out in partnership with other security agencies, were in line with the navy’s mandate to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Nigerian-Navy

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, on Saturday said recent operations by the navy in the South-South and other parts of the country, have recorded huge success.

Ibas stated this while briefing newsmen at the end of the Third Quarter Route March, in Abuja.

The naval chief was represented by Rear Adm. Adeniyi Osinowo, Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Naval Headquarters.

He said that the operations, carried out in partnership with other security agencies, were in line with the navy’s mandate to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Ibas attributed the successes to concerted efforts of the personnel in strategic and tactical levels of operations.

“We have significant cooperation as well from all cooperating agencies; we have sharpened our skills as operational concept.

“We also have dedicated anti-piracy units in place within the past few months.

“All these to a reasonable extent have decimated the undesireable series of attacks we noticed in the early part of this year.

“As it is now, we have limited attacks on offshore and on the oil and gas infrastructure,” Ibas said.

On the route march, the chief of naval staff said it was to test the fitness level of personnel in line with military tradition.

“Physical fitness is important and indeed an essental requirement for combat readiness and efficiency in all our operations both afloat and ashore.

“What we are witnessing today is part of the NN programme for the year, the third quarter 10 kilometer route march.

“It is designed to not only test our physical fitness but to also equip ourselves whether ashore or afloat,” Ibas said.

Ibas explained further that every officer was expected to meet this minimum requirement as a military personnel.

“You can see all the men and women went together and came back together without anybody dropping behind.

“It simply demonstrates how fit the officers are, and the importance of physical fitness to the operations of the military,” he said

Knees buckling and unsteady, she was rushed from a ceremony marking the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York

Clinton-s-bout-of-pneumonia-raises-worries-for-Democrats

Democrat Hillary Clinton's bout of pneumonia, kept secret until she nearly collapsed on Sunday, has raised an element of uncertainty about her health going into the final weeks of presidential campaigning and risks feeding a narrative from rival Donald Trump about her stamina.

The Clinton campaign was forced to admit on Sunday that the 68-year-old Democratic presidential nominee had been diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday after she complained of allergies and was seen coughing repeatedly in recent days.

The pneumonia disclosure was made public hours after her campaign said she had become "overheated" to explain why, knees buckling and unsteady, she was rushed from a ceremony marking the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York.

Democratic donor and fundraiser Bill Bartmann later fielded calls from about half a dozen Democrats worried about how the episode would look. The callers, he said, decided to wait and see how everything plays out.

For Democrats, the incident also brought up some familiar concerns about Clinton's penchant for secrecy during an ongoing debate about her use of a private email server while serving as President Barack Obama's secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

"You've got Donald Trump promoting health conspiracy theories to begin with, so any time something even lends an air of credence to that conspiracy, it needs to be debunked right away," Democratic strategist Bud Jackson said.

The issue also put pressure on both Clinton and Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, to reassure American voters about their health given the rigors of the presidential campaign, in which the food is often unhealthy, sleep is elusive and the packed schedule and extensive travel is stressful.

"The short term turbulence will be more about the handling of this than the substance, though I'm sure both candidates will be pressed for greater disclosure of health records," said David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Barack Obama.

Late on Sunday, her campaign canceled Clinton's trip to California scheduled for Monday morning.

The health problem was the latest blow for Clinton at a time when Trump has erased most of her lead in national opinion polls and is competitive again in many battleground states where the Nov. 8 election is likely to be decided.

Her dismissal of half of Trump's supporters as a "basket of deplorables" of racist, homophobic people on Friday triggered a firestorm of criticism and prompted her to roll back the comment.

During the Republican primary campaign Trump dispatched rival Jeb Bush by deriding him as a "low energy" candidate. His efforts to raise questions about Clinton's stamina mirror that strategy.

'IT WILL BE USED, ABSOLUTELY'

Trump aides did not immediately respond to questions about whether Trump would seek to use the Clinton health incident to his advantage. Trump, normally voluble on Twitter, stayed silent on the issue on Sunday.

"I expect they will milk it like crazy," Republican strategist Art Hackney said of the Trump campaign. "He certainly has already indicated that she doesn't have the stamina, so I think it will be used, absolutely."

Trump is expected to discuss his own health regimen in an interview to air on Thursday with celebrity physician Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Trump, a 70-year-old New York businessman, has made no secret of his affinity for fast food, sometimes sharing photos of himself on his campaign jet or at Trump Tower enjoying fried chicken, hamburgers and a taco bowl.

He has made less information available about his health than Clinton has. Last December, he released a statement from his doctor, Harold Bornstein, that described him in excellent health with "extraordinary" strength and stamina.

The statement did not mention what medicine Trump might be on or other details typically included in such disclosures and was dramatically different from the hundreds of pages of medical records released by Republican nominee John McCain in 2008 to reassure Americans about his bouts of skin cancer.

"If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," Bornstein wrote. The Manhattan physician said in August he wrote the letter in five minutes as a Trump limo waited to pick it up.

Clinton released a two-page letter outlining her medical condition in July 2015 that sought to reassure Americans about her health after she fell and suffered a concussion at home in 2012 near the end of her tenure at the State Department.

Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert and senior associate at the UPMC Center for Health Security in Pittsburgh who is not treating Clinton, said recovery from pneumonia can vary from about a week to longer, depending on the severity.

"Some patients have very little difficulties with activities of daily living and are only mildly hampered by it while others may require hospitalization and have to reduce their activities," he said, adding that pneumonia was the 8th leading cause of death in the United States.

Clinton's campaign is likely to be pressed on why she did not make her pneumonia diagnosis public until late Sunday afternoon despite receiving it two days earlier.

"I think it's exceedingly important that Hillary Clinton be transparent about what's going on," said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley. "If she gets a report of pneumonia on Friday, they should try to tell the public in real time. The danger for a candidate is if they seem to be hiding their health history."

– The young lady was molested at about 10pm after leaving her aunt’s mall

 – One of the men who carried out the act claimed to have given her the Indian hemp before the assault

– Family members uncomfortable with how the police has treated the case as it appears it has been brushed aside

– Human Rights activist says the matter will not be swept under the carpet, reports to the appropriate body

August 28, 2016 will remain an unforgettable day for 23-year-old Judith (pseudonym) after her near death experience in the hands of hoodlums.

According to The Punch, the lady was reportedly forced to take Indian hemp before by some hoodlums before they had carnal knowledge of her.

While giving an account of the incident, one of the two brothers sent to look for her when she could not be found, stated that she explained everything that happened to her and he was shocked with what he discovered.

He said: “Her slippers were all torn, the dress she was wearing was heavy with blood. She was unsteady on her feet. She could hardly stand up.

“She said some men raped her. Two men now came out of the front of the house where I found her.
One asked me what I was shouting about. He said, ‘Because she was raped, is that why you will not let people ‘hear word’? Is she the first person that will be raped here?’ After all, I gave her Igbo (hemp) and she took it.’

“I was shocked. I could not believe that he had the confidence to tell me he was even the one who gave her Indian hemp. My sister said they forced her to take the Indian hemp and two of them raped her on a chair in front of a shop.”

Reports have it that the incident took place around 10pm same day at Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, around Pako Bus Stop after the young lady had gone to her aunt’s stall at about 9pm to collect some money.

While recalling what they discussed prior to the incident, the aunt said: “I told her to wait so we could pack up together later in the evening. She did. But around 9.30pm when I was still not ready, she said she would go home. She had been sick, so, I thought it was better. Some minutes after 10pm, I packed up and left.”

Luckily, the two men who perpetrated the act (popularly identified as Wasiu and Monaco) were known faces on the street, but one of them (real name Olanrewaju Osinubi) boastfully stated that he gave her the substance to take before carrying out their dastardly act.

Explaining the ordeal further was Judith’s brother, who said: “While we were arguing there, I luckily saw a patrol van of policemen from the Dopemu Police Division passing by and I quickly approached them and explained how my sister was raped.

“The policemen came down from their vehicle and because the crowd of boys in front of the house were threatening, one of the policemen cocked his gun and they all fled.

“But, I immediately grabbed the one who said he gave her Indian hemp to smoke (Osinubi) before he could escape. The police took him and we all went to the station.”

“Before we knew what was happening, a man had come and said he was the lawyer of the one that was arrested (Osinubi). I was shocked when the suspect and his lawyer demanded that the case be transferred to the Isokoko Police Division, Agege, instead. We who were the complainant had no say in the matter,” her brother added.

Although reports say the police may have tried to sweep the matter under the carpet since Dolapo Badmus, the spokesperson of the Lagos state police command spokesperson, did not pick calls to her line, Esther Ogwu of the Esther Child Rights foundation, who was approached by the family for help on the matter, has taken up the matter and has notified the Sexual Assault department of the Lagos state inistry of Justice about the case.

She said:
“We expect that an urgent step would now be taken on this matter. This is not a case that the police should even think of sweeping under the carpet.

‘This case is not just about her, it is about other young women and girls who are in danger as long as those men are still on the loose. But I do not think the police have realised how terrible it must be for the victim that she may not get justice.”

This incident is coming just as the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday, September 8, declared total war against rape and threatened anyone caught with proper prosecution.

The governor who spoke while receiving the first-ever all male rally against domestic and sexual violence in his office, noted that all men need to be sensitised on the need to eschew abuse of women because it is totally uncalled for.

It seems like the years of innocence is almost behind us, judging from the kind of crime these little ones have been charged with.

Two little boys aged 7 and 10 years old, have been arrested for committing a crime that will make you wonder if there’s still such a thing as ‘childish innocence’. According to reports, the boys raped a one-year-old girl, forced her into a pit toilet afterwards, and went ahead to beat her with a stick till they were sure she was dead.

Despite the Nigerian army's success in driving Boko Haram out of occupied territory that 18 months ago was the size of Belgium, the militants still manage to stage regular suicide bombings.

Boko-Haram

Hundreds of Nigerians who fled Boko Haram in northeast Borno State have returned to devastated towns and villages in recent days after the army seized back the militant group's last remaining strongholds, said the United Nations.

Families will return to find their homes and farmland destroyed, basic services wiped out and will live under the persistent threat of attacks by the jihadist group, Leo Dobbs, spokesman for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"Many of the areas they are going back to have been completely devastated," said Dobbs. Homes and healthcare, agriculture, and security services are in ruin after around two years of Boko Haram rule, he added.

Despite the Nigerian army's success in driving Boko Haram out of occupied territory that 18 months ago was the size of Belgium, the militants still manage to stage regular suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
Since 2009, more than 15,000 people have been killed, 2.3 million displaced and the local economy decimated.

In the last week, buses organised by the state government have begun transporting people from the capital Maiduguri to the newly accessible areas, with others are returning by their own means, Dobbs said.

UNHCR has entered 10 districts of Borno in recent weeks, where 800,000 people are in need of urgent assistance, the agency said in a statement on Friday.

It said U.N. staff were scaling up operations but continue to require military escorts.

Dobbs said some farmers have even begun to work the fields, according to U.N. staff, despite the dangers of Boko Haram ambushes and uncleared explosive devices.

A Reuters reporter witnessed the devastation in Bama - one of the ten liberated districts - on Wednesday, where soldiers fired wildly from their vehicles pre-empting attacks by Boko Haram fighters, who have waged a seven-year Islamist insurgency.

The U.N. children's agency UNICEF said last month nearly half a million children were at risk of 'severe acute malnutrition' in the area around Lake Chad that has been ravaged by Boko Haram.
